Punters club rules you can copy
Ten rules, each with the reason it exists. Copy the lot into your group chat, change the numbers to suit, and pin it. You'll point at it in round fourteen.
By the blokes at Punters Ledger · Updated 12 September 2026
Every punters club argument we've ever seen comes from a rule that was never written down. Not a bad rule, a missing one. Someone misses the deadline and there's no penalty. Someone's leg gets scratched and half the club thinks it's a loss. Someone quits in July and wants their money back.
These are the rules we run. They've been argued over and fixed a few times. Take them as they are or change the numbers, but write something down.
Rule 1
Dues are $20 a punter, every round, whether you lodge or not
Twenty dollars into the kitty per punter per round. Owed the moment the round opens. Paid by the deadline.
If dues only apply when you lodge, people skip weeks they don't fancy and the kitty starves. Everyone in, every week, keeps the club a club.
Rule 2
One leg each, minimum odds $1.50
Each punter submits exactly one selection per round, at $1.50 or better. Any sport, any market, as long as it settles before the next round opens.
Without a floor, someone puts up a $1.08 favourite every week and lets everyone else carry the risk. The floor makes every leg matter.
Rule 3
Deadline is Thursday 6pm, no exceptions
Legs in by the deadline or you've missed the round. The admin puts the multi on after the deadline, not before.
A soft deadline is no deadline. The admin ends up chasing the same two blokes at 9pm every Thursday, and eventually the admin quits.
Rule 4
Miss the deadline and the admin picks for you
If you haven't lodged by the deadline, the admin puts in a leg on your behalf at the minimum odds or better. It counts on your ladder record. Your dues are still owed.
This is the fairest penalty we've found. The multi still has every leg, you still pay, and you cop whatever the admin picked. People stop missing deadlines fast.
Rule 5
The stake is $100 a round, from the kitty
The club multi is placed for $100 each round out of the kitty. The admin places it, screenshots the slip and posts it in the chat before the first game starts.
The screenshot is the record. It proves what went on, at what odds, and when. No screenshot, no argument possible about what the multi was.
Rule 6
Void legs come out at $1.00
A scratched runner, an abandoned game or a pushed line is a void leg. It's removed from the multi at odds of $1.00, exactly as the bookie does it, and it doesn't count as a win or a loss on the ladder.
Half of every club thinks a void is a loss. It isn't, and your bookie's already settled it that way. Match the bookie and there's nothing to argue about.
Rule 7
The ladder ranks by win rate, then flat-stake profit
Punters are ranked by win rate, the share of their decided legs that won. Ties are broken by flat-stake profit: what you'd be up or down if every leg was a $100 bet on its own.
Win rate alone flatters the bloke who backs favourites. Flat-stake profit gives the longshot backer credit for the risk. Together they're fair, and the ladder is the whole reason people stay in.
Rule 8
The kitty is for the end-of-season trip
Nothing comes out of the kitty during the season except the weekly stake. At the end of the season it gets spent on the thing agreed before round one. Any change to that needs every punter to agree.
Decide this while the kitty is empty. With four grand in the tin in September, six blokes will have six ideas.
Rule 9
Join mid-season at the bottom, leave with nothing
A new punter can join at any round with everyone's okay. They start on zero on the ladder and they don't share in the kitty built before they joined unless the club agrees. Anyone who leaves forfeits their share.
Saying it up front means nobody leaves in a huff expecting a payout, and nobody joins in round twenty to ride a big kitty.
Rule 10
The admin's call is final, and the admin shows the books
Disputes go to the admin and the admin's decision stands. In return, the admin posts the kitty balance and the ladder after every round, and shows the full ledger to anyone who asks.
Somebody has to be able to end an argument. The price of that power is total transparency about the money. Both halves matter.
Variations that work
- Fines instead of admin picks. Miss the deadline, ten dollars to the kitty. Works if your club is more relaxed, but some blokes will happily pay ten bucks to skip a week.
- Teams. Split the club into two or three fixed teams for the season, each running its own multi, and race them. More slips, more chances of a collect, and a team to blame.
- Rotating captain. One punter picks the whole club's bet each round. Win and they keep the arm, lose and it passes on. Brutal, and very funny.
- Odds ceiling. Some clubs cap legs at $5.00 so the multi has a fighting chance. Others let it run. Depends whether your club wants the odd big collect or a steady kitty.
What to do with these
Copy them into the group chat, change the dollar figures and the deadline, and pin the message. If your club argues about something that isn't covered, add a rule and re-pin. The list should grow by about one rule a season.
If you want the mechanical rules applied automatically, so the deadline actually locks, void legs actually come out of the multi, dues get marked and the ladder ranks itself, that's what the app does. The human ones, like whose call is final, stay yours. The demo is a real club you can poke around in.
